Red Bend Software Now Reaches 680 Million Mobile Devices

Market Demand for Over-the-Air Software Updating on Smartphones and Connected Devices Helps Fuel 80 Percent Growth

LAS VEGAS, CTIA Wireless 2010—March 22, 2010—Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced that its vRapid Mobile® and vDirect Mobile™ software products shipped in 680 million mobile devices worldwide through 2009 from leading manufacturers including LG, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, ZTE, Kyocera and HTC. In 2009, manufacturers shipped 246 new Red Bend-Enabled™ device models compared to 137 in 2008—an 80 percent year-over-year increase. In addition, during fourth quarter Red Bend renewed a top manufacturer contract and signed five new customers, for a total of 57 licensees of its standards-based, cross-platform solutions for mobile software updating and device management.

While worldwide handset shipments declined 5.2 percent in 2009 according to IDC, market demand for Red Bend’s firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating software and Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA-DM) client was strong, particularly for connected wireless devices. This category now accounts for nearly 10 percent of devices with the company’s software, driven by operators’ need to manage all wirelessly connected devices in a standards-based, unified manner. Red Bend-Enabled devices include smartphones, WiMAX modems, netbooks and machine-to-machine (M2M) modules.

Fourth Quarter and 2009 Highlights:

• Customer Expansion – In Q4, a top mobile phone manufacturer renewed its multi-year license agreement, demonstrating Red Bend’s value to quickly, efficiently and reliably provide software improvements over the air to mobile consumers. Red Bend also signed five new customers and announced agreements with two more platform providers—Wind River and Qualcomm—continuing its expansion globally.
  
• M2M Leadership – With the addition of Sagem Communications, Red Bend now has access to 50 percent of the M2M module market. Red Bend’s over-the-air updating solution enables M2M providers and enterprise customers to protect their investments by delivering new software features without sending a technician on-site.
  
• Patents Granted – Red Bend received two new U.S. patents for its innovative MSM technologies that make mobile device updates faster, simpler and more cost-effective. The patents cover Red Bend’s methods for revertible and failsafe in-place updating, which improve the user experience and enable Red Bend’s customers to reduce support costs and increase service revenues.
  
• Industry Recognition – VisionMobile recognized vRapid Mobile for the distinction of being in the top five percent of mobile software shipments. Red Bend also was awarded second place in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 for 4,336 percent revenue growth over five years.
